Memory Pegging with Stories Exercise

Memory Pegging with Stories Exercise

Purpose

This exercise helps delegates improve memory retention by using the memory pegging technique, where they associate unrelated words or concepts with vivid images or short stories. The goal is to create a memorable connection between ideas, which makes it easier to recall information.

Objective

Delegates are given a list of 20 unrelated words or concepts—far exceeding the typical capacity of working memory—and must create a short story that connects all of them. After creating the story, they will recall the list of words based on the story they created. This exercise strengthens memory retention by using storytelling as a tool for meaningful association.

What You Need

  • A Word List for each delegate. Each one is a list of 20 unrelated words or concepts. Word Lists should be unique. It is ok if some of the words are common between the lists, but each list should be fundamentally unique for each delegate. A set of Word Lists are provided at the end for your reference. Example of a Word List:
Apple, mountain, fish, guitar, train, glass, rainbow, shoe, lion, clock, balloon, river, book, castle, tree, dog, camera, star, ladder, pencil.
  • Blank papers

Setup

  • Explain that memory pegging involves associating unrelated facts or ideas with vivid mental images or stories. By linking information through a creative narrative, delegates can enhance their ability to recall seemingly disconnected words or concepts.
  • Distribute one unique Word List to each delegate.
  • Set the challenge:
    • Each delegate must create a short story that connects all 20 words on the list. They should aim to make the story as vivid and memorable as possible, using creative and unexpected connections between the words.
    • Give them 5 minutes to come up with their stories. Encourage them to use imagery and strong mental associations to tie the concepts together.
  • After each delegate has created their story, divide the delegates to pairs and use groups of 3 if you have an odd number.
  • Get each delegate in each pair to take turns recalling the list of 20 words by using their story as a memory aid. As one delegate recalls the words, their partner will check the original Word List to ensure accuracy.
  • Once Delegate 1 has recalled the list, Delegate 2 will recall their list of words using their own story, while Delegate 1 checks for accuracy.
  • After both delegates have shared and tested their stories, come back together as a group to reflect on the experience and discuss the effectiveness of memory pegging.

Timing

Explaining the Exercise: 2 minutes

Activity: 5 min for creating the story + 5 minutes for pairs to recall the list and check with each other = 10 minutes

Group Feedback: 10 minutes

Discussion

Lead a group discussion to reflect on how storytelling helped with memory retention. Use the following questions to guide the conversation:

  • How easy or difficult was it to create a story that connected all the unrelated words?
  • How well were you able to recall the list using the story you created? Were there any words that were easier or harder to remember based on their place in the story?
  • What elements of your story such as vivid imagery, humour or unusual connections, helped make it more memorable?
  • How did hearing your partner’s story differ from your own approach? Did you learn any new strategies for linking ideas?
  • How could you apply this memory pegging technique in real-life situations, such as learning new concepts, studying or retaining important information?
  • What surprised you most about the effectiveness of storytelling in helping you remember the list?
